The Matamata-Piako District is located in the north-eastern part of the Waikato region in New Zealand.
Opportunities
The Matamata-Piako District is well-known for its dairy farming and thoroughbred racing industries. Major attractions include Mount Te Aroha, and the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park, both of which host day walks and overnight expeditions. A popular tourist attraction in the Matamata-Piako District is Hobbiton, the original movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. The Matamata-Piako District is also home to the Te Aroha Mineral Spas and the Mokena Geyser, the only natural hot soda water geyser in the world.
The Matamata-Piako District Council’s top three industries based on GDP is dairy cattle farming, meat and meat product manufacturing, and basic chemical and chemical product manufacturing.

There are multiple types of land available for business, agricultural and residential development in the Matamata-Piako District Council municipality. The commercial and retail rental expenses are also lower than many of New Zealand’s other commercial centres, making business opportunities more accessible for budding businesses.
Infrastructure
Businesses in the Matamata-Piako District enjoys easy access to four major State Highways (24, 26, 27 and 29), along with a number of railway lines, all of which pass through Matamata-Piako. The District is also located at the centre of the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, and is in close proximity to the ports located in both Auckland and Tauranga, and Hamilton Airport.

The development of an inland port at Ruakura in neighbouring Hamilton City will also be an opportunity for Matamata-Piako to capitalise on its fertile soils and agricultural ability to increase freight opportunities through the District.
