Victoria on the River to host first theatrical production

Victoria on the River to host first theatrical production

Victoria on the River has been well used this summer with a variety of events being held there. And this week it will, for the first time, host a theatrical production.

Theatre lovers will get an early viewing when theatre production company Slip of the Tongue will perform Pericles Prince of Tyre on February 14 and 15 ahead of its season at the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival, which kicks off on February 20.

Assistant director Katie Hansen said Victoria on the River (VOTR) was a different venue to the one they’d be performing at during the Arts Festival. And while the props they use are minimal – just three boxes, in fact – the practicalities of actors’ entrances and exits are challenging at VOTR.

Pericles – a rarely performed piece by William Shakespeare and George Wilkins – is billed as a fairy tale filled with romance, adventure, where good triumphs somewhat mysteriously over evil.

A group of wanton wandering players bring to life a colourful world where miracles can happen. Pericles encounters love, death, and magic.

A band will provide live music to accompany the production.

Katie said the play’s content was family-friendly so children and adults alike are welcome to attend.

The play starts at 7pm on February 14 and 15 and people are welcome to bring a picnic, cushions and blankets. The play runs for approximately two hours.

There is no entry fee; instead a hat is passed around at the end for donations.
