Inspirational Waikato women to speak at event

The Waikato Chamber of Commerce is again hosting The League of Extraordinary Women – an event that sees a panel of inspirational Waikato businesswomen speak about their journeys.

The second of this year’s three events will be held on June 18 at The Verandah at Hamilton lake.

The speakers are Miria Flavell, Meleane Burgess and Michelle Holman.

Miria is a māmā, makeup artist, YouTuber, influencer and business owner. She uses her various online platforms to encourage and influence young women to follow their dreams.

In 2017 Miria was featured on One News for being the first ever person to film and upload a makeup tutorial in Te Reo Māori, and recently launched her own activewear line to cater to women of all shapes and sizes.

Meleane is an accountant, and the founder and chairperson of Waikato Pacific Business Network, an organisation set up to support Pacific businesses and professionals.

Earlier this year Meleane was the only Pacific woman to stand in the Hamilton East by-election. She’s also now the director of Dynamic Advisory Ltd, a company she established to provide business advice and accounting services.

Michelle Holman has two lives: one as the author of five novels and the other as a registered nurse and professional supervisor. She lives with her husband on a lifestyle block near Cambridge and in her spare time rides her horse and tries not to fall off, gets taken for walks by the dog and bossed around by two cats.

Vivacious rockstar writer and trainer Shelly Davies will again MC the event, which is this time sponsored by ASB.

“We don’t bring in amazing women from all over the country because we don’t need to,” Shelly said.

“We look around us and everywhere we look, we see EXTRAORDINARY. Waikato women, shining bright, working hard, achieving great things, often quietly in the background. So, we’re celebrating them!

“Women in business, women wanting to be in business, women with an idea, women looking for

an idea, women who just want a night away from the kids and a drink with the girls – whichever of these you might be, our League of Extraordinary Women is for you,” Shelly said.

This is the third time the event will be held. With the huge interest and attendance in the event, it has well and truly cemented its place in the Chamber’s events line-up.

“The previous events proved that all we need to do is get these women into a space together and the magic happens. Women, lifting each other up, learning and celebrating.”

But it’s not just for women – everyone is welcome. Last time a handful of men attended and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and learning about the speakers’ journeys and insights.

The panel will speak about their peaks and troughs, lessons learnt and their roads to success – warts and all. There will be time at the end for the audience to ask the panel questions.

The League of Extraordinary Women is on Monday, June 18 at The Verandah. Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

Tickets are $15 for Waikato Chamber of Commerce members, $30 for non-members. Nibbles provided, cash bar operating.
